Open Race Training - under the umbrella of Highland & Moray Sailing

ORT is for Juniors & Youths. The first event was run alongside RYAS North Squad on 13 November 2010 at Lochcarron Sailing Club. Entry criteria are Stage 3 and a bit of club racing. Course dates

The courses run from 9:30AM to 16:30PM with the intention to take part in any club racing taking place. In the winter the intention is that ORT will run on most Saturdays of the regional RYAS North Squad (NS). The NS dates are also published on this web site. The days planned for ORT are:

5 November 2011 - Lochcarron
3 March 2012 - Chanonry
17 March 2012 - Chanonry

There will be closing dates for entry 6 days beforehand to allow the coordinators to engage the right resources for the event. Payment must be made before the event.

Open Race Training - What is it?

ORT has been set up by the sailing clubs in the Highlands and Moray with the objective that young sailors can benefit from more formal coaching in a wider group than can be achieved by any one club alone. Some will move on to the regional RYAS North Squad (NS) or the RYAS National Squads. Some may join ORT as they leave the regional or national squads. The objective is to help you to improve your existing skills and to learn new ones.

The training consists of on-the-water work (weather dependent) and on-shore briefings/theory sessions normally delivered by local Level 2 Race Coaches. The coaches give their time and expertise free of charge although they are recompensed for some of the expenses involved for them. Please extend your appreciation and assist with the ongoing chores associated with the course – e.g. cleaning-up afterwards!

Fees

The course costs £20 per person per 1 day session to cover the costs incurred by the host club and HMS.

Joining Instructions

These instructions detail the information you need and what you have to do before starting the course.

Registration:
Complete the on-line Registration Form and submit it before your first event; the closing date will be 5 days beforehand. If you have previously registered in 2012 but your details have changed then submit the form again.
Event Entry:
Complete the on-line Event Entry form for each event; the closing date will be 5 days beforehand.
Payment:
Pay for your entry(s) using PayPal via the ORTPay page on this site. Using PayPal is easy and does NOT involve you in creating a PayPal account. All you need is a debit or credit card.
HMS will use the teamer.net web site to communicate with the ORT pool of sailors before events and to remind you to pay in good time.

What to wear and bring

Ideally you will use your own dinghy during the course however some host clubs may have spare club boats. For example - at Chanonry SC Club Optimist, Tera or Sea Scout Topaz can be made available on a first come first served basis.
Ideal clothing is either a wet suit, with a windproof cagoule/spray jacket over the top, or a dry suit (worn over a warm base layer), together with suitable dinghy boots, fingerless gloves and a fleece hat; all depending on the weather.
Bring your own buoyancy aid (buoyancy aids suitable for swimmers only can be provided at Chanonry SC).
Bring a full change of clothing & towel for the end of the practical days.
Bring your Racing Rules book if you have one – there may be homework!
Drinks and snacks may be available depending on the venue. The fees normally include lunch for participants and if this is not the case you will be told to either bring a packed lunch or that lunch may be purchased on-site.
