Chairman's update - Nov 2011 30/11/2011
RYA Scotland hosted a well attended inaugural meeting at Port Edgar on 27 November of Sailing Development Group Office Bearers from across Scotland. While a record of the meeting will be issued I thought it could be useful if I highlighted some items particularly relevant to HMS. I've also added a couple of news items at the end of the message. RYAS Strategic Plan James Stuart (COO RYAS) is very keen to reflect SDG needs in the next strategic plan (2013 - 16). March 2012 will be the time to collect input and James plans to attend the HM Sailing Seminar at Royal Findhorn YC on 10 March 2012 so part of our programme will again include a Reps meeting. Come with ideas! SDG Junior Sailing Championships The suggestion is for each SDG to hold a junior sailing championship on the same weekend across Scotland 6/7 October 2012. If we want to do this, we need to put it on our operational plan, find a host and arrange support. Honda RIB championships This popular event will take place on 16 June 2012 but this time the intention is to have 4 training events spread across the country. Simon Paterson has been tasked to run a northern event and is in contact with one of our clubs to see if they could provide the venue. Junior dinghy trip to Shetland? The chairperson of Shetland & Orkney Sailing (yes, SOS), Marsali Taylor, has made a tentative invitation for HMS juniors to fly-up to Shetland in the summer to train and compete with the SOS juniors. This may be something we would like to explore in the context of Open Race Training and enter in the operational plan. If this goes ahead, the understanding would be that we would host a return match in 2013. Safeguarding Children & Protected Adults. If your policy has not been updated for a couple of years it will almost certainly be out of date. RYAS now offers an on-line template that you can adapt for your club or centre's needs - see link. RYAS Big Weekend 25/26 February 2012 will now have some trade stands (Boat Show) and will also include the RYAS Annual Award Ceremony - keep checking for details and please consider making some nominations for the awards. See link. HMS News Regional Race Management Seminar (for aspiring Regional Race Officers) will be hosted by Chanonry SC over a weekend in February and will be delivered by David Kent of the Scottish Sailing Institute hopefully assisted by Iona Cornish. The cost will be £75/head but for Highland residents, Coaching Highland grants will be available as the Regional Race Officers will then be able to train Club Race Officers in their own clubs. The precise dates are still under discussion but if you are interested, please contact training@chanonry.org.uk. HMS Sailing Seminar 10 March @ Royal Findhorn YC Confirmed so far (in addition to James Stuart) is Chris Owen (SailTrimCoach), Lorna Summers & Pete Danks (Portsoy build your own Optimist project) & Jude Monson (successful yacht race crew who competes internationally without owning her own boat - aimed at the younger sailor wanting to make the transition from dinghies to yachts). RYA Scotland BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero 2011 We know you have some fantastic volunteers in your clubs and centres, most of whom would never seek or expect any reward or recognition for all the hard work they do. Now is your chance to show them how much they mean to the club. Nominations for BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero 2011 are now open! "The awards have been run annually since 2003. They recognise special people who dedicate their lives to promoting sport in their community, taking no reward from it other than the pleasure of helping others to take part and enjoy their sport. The search for our BBC's Sports Unsung Heroes takes place across the United Kingdom. It will see winners named in all 12 of our BBC English Regions plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each winner will go forward for final judging, when an overall winner is named at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year event in Salford on Thursday, 22 December live on BBC ONE." For more information and to download the nomination form please visit: BBC Sports Personality of the Year - Unsung Hero 2011 Nomination forms must be returned (to the BBC Not us!!) by 2359 GMT on Sunday 30 October. Jane Campbell Morrison RYAS Development Manager 6 days of taster activity have been arranged for disabled sailing in 2012 – if you are keen to hear more about the dates and venues, please email ryas.sailability@ryascotland.org.uk
RYAS Development Officer OnBoard Festival The OnBoard festival took place on the 3rd of September at SailLaser with 28 kids from 4 of the OnBoard centres. The day saw the kids split into 4 teams and rotated around four fun activities. Once again Lochore Meadows won the team prize. This year we encouraged the parents to try sailing and 13 of them had a sail in an SB3. All the parents loved it and most are keen to sail again. Sail For Gold Although many of the sailors have been selected for the 2012 Olympics the 470 and Laser Radial classes are yet to be decided. This is the 2 classes where we have Scottish sailors, Luke Patience and Charlotte Dobson. The selection for these classes will take place after the Worlds at the end of November in Sidney. There are many clubs in Scotland signed up for Sail for Gold and most have had fantastic events. There will be more ‘goodies’ coming from Hamble at the beginning of the season. The Olympic Activation Group have produced poster and press release templates, information for schools and a quiz which has been put onto memory sticks for the clubs and centres signed up. If you are not already signed up it is not to late just go to http://www.rya.org.uk/programmes/sailforgold/participate/Pages/activator-form.aspx Sail to Learn Another Sail to Learn training day has been arranged for the 12th of November, the training will provisionally take place at Bardowie Loch. If you are interested in being able to run Sail to Learn sessions for your local schools please emailangie@ryascotland.org.uk Nick Scott RYAS High Performance Manager SailRacer We need feedback on the functionality of Sailracer. It would be helpful to know peoples competence level with it. Are people confident making a squad, inputting dates, changing letter send outs etc? Any comments should be directed to Nick at nick.scott@ryascotland.org.uk Adam McGovern RYAS Club & Pathway Development Officer - Benmore Trophy 29th October: To enter email adam.mcgovern@ryascotland.org.uk - Winter & 2012 Regattas - encourage clubs to email Adam with winter & 2012 regatta dates to go into RYA Scotland Calendar Claire Harrower Marketing Officer · Attended the Scout Acceler8 event at Fordell Firs – Although the footfall wasn’t huge and it wasn’t really an opportunity to sell membership it was great to hand out lots of information on courses and to get the leaders to think about using sailing as part of their plans for next year · Attended the Scottish Windfest – This was a fantastic event and we were offering free junior membership and discounted youth membership. Although only 17 signed up it was a great opportunity to speak to the organisers and see how we could get more involved next year. The weather was good and the locals seemed very happy to have such an impressive event taking place in their local area · Submitted a proposal to Malin Waters asking them to be the gold sponsor for our Big Weekend in February · Sent copies of the manifesto and a short letter to go onto all the boats at the Forth and Clyde 10 event · Attending a social media networking event at sportscotland which was a great opportunity to meet marketing/comms people from different sports and get an idea of what they are doing and what is working well for them Simon Paterson RYA Scotland SDG Co-ordinator E; sdg1@ryascotland.org.uk T; 01309 690099 CRO Details Peterhead Sailing Club will be hosting a RYA Club Race Officer course on Saturday November 5th between 10am (please meet at 9:30am for a prompt start) and approximately 4:30pm. Dear Reps, The last HMS meeting decided to hold the 2012 seminar on Saturday, 3 March 2012; however, on checking, that date clashes with an RYAS NS weekend and I would not want any dinghy coaches or sailors to have to miss the event so I propose that we slip to Saturday, 10 March 2012 (this date is clear on the RYAS calendar). I realise that a lot of cruiser owners will be thinking about anti-fouling in March but realistically the date cannot come forward without clashing with major events such as the RYAS Big Weekend (25/26 February) or perhaps running the risk of even worse weather! If you have a problem with 10 March, please let me know by 10 October...otherwise 10 March will become the firm date. We need to start working on themes & speakers for the seminar and also think about a location. I would like to see something of interest for cruising, dinghy racing and powerboating sailors...possibly something for club officials too. If you have any thoughts, please share them by email. Regarding location, I think we should plan for 100 attendees and we will need 3 rooms capable of taking groups of 30 to 60, reasonable access, parking & some catering options. Again if you have any thoughts on the matter please let me know. Finally, our next meeting is scheduled for 8 November and we are still looking for a club or centre to volunteer to host this (otherwise we will have to hire a facility)...the main purpose of the 8 November meeting is to agree the seminar arrangements so investing some time to it now should result in something you will want to got to!
